With profound sadness and deep admiration, we announce the passing of M. Gayle Wells, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and lifelong public servant.
Gayle entered eternal rest on Friday, July 11th, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 78 years old. Gayle proudly served in law enforcement for an extraordinary 54 years, beginning his career in 1968 as a patrol officer with the Carthage Police Department. His commitment to public safety led him to serve with the Joplin, Grove, Grand River Dam Authority, and Delaware County Sheriff’s Departments. In 1995, he was appointed Chief of Police in Grove, Oklahoma, where he played a pivotal role in upgrading the 911 Communications Center, modernizing reporting systems, and introducing in-car camera technology.
Gayle’s dedication extended beyond patrol and leadership—he helped shape the future of law enforcement as a member of curriculum committees for Missouri Southern State University and Northeastern Oklahoma’s law enforcement training programs. His service left a lasting impact on generations of officers and the communities they protect. He earned the honor of being inducted into the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Hall of Fame in 2018, He was very honored and proud.
Gayle is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Nina Wells, and their three children: Kelli, Bill and Michael. He also leaves behind his brother, numerous grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren who will continue to carry his memory forward.
Those who knew Gayle remember him as a man of strength, humility, and quiet wisdom—a protector of his community and a constant presence in the lives of his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, both professionally and personally.
In his honor, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, whose mission to save lives and celebrate them reflects the very spirit Gayle carried throughout his life. https://raiseyourway.donordrive.com/campaign/In-Memory-of-M--Gayle-Wells-
