John Lee Porter, a respected member of the Grove, Oklahoma community, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, under the compassionate care of Good Shepherd Hospice. He was born on October 4, 1939, in Picher, Oklahoma, and lived a life defined by his deep devotion to family, a strong work ethic, and an appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
John spent his early years in Picher, then completed his education in Baxter Springs, KS, before beginning a career that would shape much of his life. In 1968, he relocated within Oklahoma and went to work at the B.F. Goodrich Plant, where he remained a dedicated employee until its closure. He later continued serving his community through his work in security at Walmart.
Outside of work, John found great joy in the things he loved most. He was passionate about football, both as a player in his younger years and as a devoted fan of the University of Oklahoma. He was also an avid bowler and cherished time spent outdoors, especially fishing at Lake Livingston with his little buddy and brother-in-law Ziggy, and duck hunting alongside his close friend, Steve Williams.
At the heart of John’s life was his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took great pride in those he held dear. He shared sixty years of marriage with his devoted wife, Gracie Ann Porter. Together, they built a strong and loving family, including their children: Chris Porter; Ann Barwig and husband Bill; Brandee Watson and husband Preston; and David Porter and wife Sunni.
He was a proud grandfather to John Caleb Porter, Kristen Jones, Billy Barwig, Ryan Barwig, Brandon Barwig, Emily Porter (Blythe), Megan Porter, Brianna Collins-Kasha, and Danielle Watson, and Cory Watson; and a cherished great-grandfather to Nathan, Owen, Charlotte, Zaden, Courtland, Justin, and Natalie. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Williams.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John William Porter and Helen (Lucy) Strain; and his siblings, Jim Rice, Robert Porter, Louise Pitts, and Betty Porter.
John will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, steady character, and a warm heart. His love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his enjoyment of life’s simple moments leave a lasting legacy. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
