Jim Hogan

August 2, 1954 — November 23, 2023

Moore

James Shannon “Jim” Hogan departed this life on Thanksgiving Day Nov 23, 2023.  He was freed from debilitating pain which plagued him for so many years, and is now singing with the choirs of angels in Heaven.

Jim was born in Great Bend, Ks on August 2, 1954 to J.D. Hogan and Carmen Campbell Hogan. He was the third of 4 sons. The family moved frequently during his childhood to follow his father’s job as a Roustabout on oil Derricks in Kansas and northern Oklahoma.  He attended schools in Shidler, Kaw City, Ponca City and Pawnee, where he graduated in 1972. He attended one year of college at Northern Okla College in Tonkawa. It was there that he met Andrea Fields who became his wife and the couple moved to Northeast Okla, near her family.

He began employment at Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, OK in 1973 as a Mental Health Aide.  This employment continued for 24 years.  He worked as a Machinist in Grove for 4 years, after leaving State employment.  Eventually he returned to health care work as a CNA at Assisted Living Facilities in Grove and providing in-home care as well.  His last employer was Integris Home Medical.  Years of back pain and multiple surgeries resulted in an early retirement.

Jim was a talented musician, playing the guitar simply be ear.  He could hear a song and play it.  As a young man he was the drummer in a local band in Vinita. The group was made up of co-workers at ESH.  They played at local taverns and clubs in Vinta. He had a wonderful voice as well and entertained the patrons on Karaoke nights at the Grove Moose Lodge.  He was outstanding performing Merle Haggard tunes but his signature song was “Cattle Call” which could bring the house down.

To say that Jim was a sports enthusiast is an understatement.  He loved watching his children Amy and Travis play baseball, softball and football.  In addition, he was the Chicago Cubs #1 fan and loved the Dallas Cowboys as well.  After the Cubs won the 2016 World Series he felt that life was perfect. He also loved NASCAR racing and often did a bit of racing of his own in his prized “68 GTO which he named Sally. Jim had an incredible knowledge of sports trivia and stats.  He could tell you about specific plays and scores from football and baseball games of long ago.

He was an active member of the Grove Moose Lodge for many years.  He also was actively involved with the Oklahoma Public Employee Association during his state employment. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Vinta and later St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Grove.

In 1989 Jim married his current wife, Marcy.  Together they blended a family of 6 children. There were lots of fishing and camping trips and an epic family vacation to Wrigley Field for a Cubs game. Seeing all the children develop into successful adults was a great source of pride for him.  He loved passionately and especially adored all the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jim always did things with a passion, playing cards, working on his car, boating, or even something as simple as mowing the yard.  He could debate politics and current events with anyone. He made friends easily and was always the life of the party.  He loved to laugh and make other’s laugh with his made-up stories and tall tales.  He was a loyal friend to many. He loved Grand Lake and his dream came true when they were able to retire there.  He especially enjoyed taking the kids and grandkids on boat rides and tubing.

Those preceding him in death include his parents and brothers Skip Hogan, Richard Hogan, Lance Hogan and stepson Ted Lauchner.
