Donald Edward Smith, a devoted minister, dedicated community leader, and cherished family patriarch, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, in Grove, Oklahoma, surrounded by the Holy Spirit and his wife. Born on September 18, 1945, in San Jose, California, Don's life was marked by unwavering faith, a profound love for people, and a commitment to service that touched many lives.
Don attended Shiloh Bible College, where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Theology that laid the foundation for a rich and impactful career in ministry. While working on his Theology degree, he pioneered Melody Christian Fellowship in Stillwater, OK, which ignited Don's passion for church planting. After leaving Oklahoma in 1984, Don returned to California, where he joined the Four Square Denomination as a senior pastor for The Living Way church in Concord. Over his 35-year career, he mentored new pastors who went off to pioneer other churches, devoted himself to building and starting churches, nurturing congregations, providing spiritual guidance, and spreading hope. His leadership extended beyond the pulpit; he served as the president of the Lions Club and as the CEO of an organization dedicated to helping abused women, demonstrating his deep commitment to healing and restoration in the broader community.
In addition to serving the Lord, Don also served his country in the Army Reserves, reflecting his dedication to his country alongside his spiritual calling. Beyond his professional life, Don was a man of varied talents and passions. He found joy in restoring old furniture and woodworking, activities through which he expressed creativity and patience. An avid traveler, he explored the world with curiosity and enthusiasm. Music was a central joy in his life — he sang, composed, and played both guitar and piano, sharing the gift of melody with those around him. Gardening was also a cherished pastime, signifying his nurturing spirit.
Don is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Patti Smith, who stood by his side during his final season in life. He is survived by children Dawn Young, her husband Ned, and their children Jacob and Sydney; John Smith, his wife Karen, and their daughters Savannah and Abigail, and John's eldest daughter Lynzie Smith Young; Ben Smith and his son Nathan; and Haley Bartholomew, her husband Roderic Kerner, and their daughter Eliza, who loved her Opa dearly. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Elijah, Mia, Maddison, and one more on the way. Don's siblings, Steward Smith and Susanna Smith, also carry forward his legacy of kindness and faith.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Frankie Smith, as well as his parents, Edward and Celeste Smith.
Don's life was a testament to love, faith, and resilience. His dedication to his family, his congregation, and his community will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and creativity that endures in the hearts of his family and all he touched. His memory will be a blessing and a guiding light for generations to come.
Don's memorial and celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 30th, at Crossroads Church, located at 56900 E. Hwy 59, Fairland, OK.
